Easy Homemade Dog Treats Recipe

Today, is the last day of the Wondermill Grain Mill Challenge. If you aren’t familiar with the challenge, it goes like this: Wondermill sends a grain mill to a blogger and challenges her to make 3 recipes using freshly ground flour.

After I received my Wondermill, the first thing I made was Christmas cookies for my kiddos. Then, I made the best-tasting, gluten-free bread for my husband. So now, that only leaves one thing to make—some homemade dog treats for my best girl, Ig.

Here’s what she thinks of this idea:

As you can see, Miss Iggy’s nickname “Iggy Piggy” fits her well. She loves the goodies! And this recipe is one of her favorites. If you want to skip the Milk-Bone isle and make a healthy cook-from-scratch alternative for your favorite fur friend, Iggy and I recommend you try this easy homemade dog treats recipe.

Everyone loves cookies and dogs are no exception! Use your Wondermill to spoil your four-legged friend. Let me show you how easy it is to whip up these peanut butter dog treats.

First, you’ll need to grind a cup and a half of wheat berries. For this recipe, I used half hard red wheat and half soft white wheat.

Turn on your Wondermill and pour the wheat berries in the top. The result is fluffy, fresh whole wheat flour.

Next, preheat your oven to 300 degrees. In a large bowl, combine the flour, oats, parsley, dry milk, salt and stir until mixed.

Add the eggs and peanut butter and mix well. (Expect it to be crumbly!) Add the cold water and mix until dough is cohesive.

Next, roll out the dough approximately 1/4” thick. It will look cracked with ragged edges but, no worries. I promise your pup won’t care.

Use your cookie cutter to cut out the dog biscuits. If you don’t have a bone-shape cookie cutter, use whatever you have. Again, I promise your pup won’t care. Repeat the process of rolling out the dough and cutting biscuits until you have no dough left.

Then, place the biscuits on a greased cookie sheet or one lined with parchment paper. It’s fine to put them pretty close together as they won’t expand much while baking.

Bake for 40 to 60 minutes. The baking time will vary depending on the size of the biscuit you are making. So after 40 minutes, check on them every few minutes until they are done. You’ll know they are done when when they are golden brown and dry and crisp all the way through.
